Swimmer’s body found off northern beaches

The search for a missing swimmer off Sydney’s northern beaches has ended in tragedy after emergency services discovered the body of a man believed to have been in his 50s.

Emergency services were called to Newport Beach just before 10am on Sunday after receiving a call from a person concerned for the welfare of a man swimming in waters nearby.

Police attached to the Northern Beaches Area Command rushed to the scene and quickly began a search alongside crews from the water police, Surf Life Saving NSW, PolAir, Marine Rescue and a Westpac rescue helicopter.

Crews located the man’s body about 1.30am close to where he had been seen in trouble.

The body is yet to be formally identified.
