Parents of allegedly murdered surfer plead for killer to come forward

By Jessica McSweeney

The mother of a young surfer allegedly stabbed to death at a NSW beach said she has “lost faith in humanity” as her son’s killer remains on the run.

Kye Schaefer, 21, was an avid surfer and soccer player and was heading to a beach at Coffs Harbour to catch some waves before work on May 2.

It was at his surf spot of choice where he was allegedly stabbed and left to die in the carpark on Ocean Parade. An ambulance crew arrived around 6.40am but Schaefer’s wounds were so severe that he died a short time later at Coffs Harbour Base Hospital.

Two weeks later, Kye’s parents Pam and Tony have released a public plea for their son’s alleged killer to come forward.

“No words can ultimately describe how we are feeling, just the sheer loss of our faith of humanity, really,” Pam Schaefer said.

Speaking through tears, Pam said she couldn’t understand how any person could do what was done to her son.

“It’s shocked me a bit. He didn’t do anything wrong, he was just going for a surf before he went to work,” she said.

“Be honest and own up for your mistakes in life, everyone makes them … it’s just a waste,” he said.

Police want anyone who may have been in the area to come forward with any information about what they may have seen.

“A 21-year-old has been cut down in the prime of his life, his life has been savagely taken away from him in a random and unprovoked attack,” NSW Police homicide squad commander Danny Doherty said earlier this month.
