More tales of grievous brotherly harm

Reading of Jenny Stephenson’s brother’s death threats (C8) reminded Kerri Grant of Bathurst of one of many near-death experiences inflicted on her by her own brother, when “he fashioned a billy cart with an old high chair loosely tied to the back. Down the hill we went, when he swerved to turn a corner the rope broke, and I careered on down the hill minus billy cart, brakes or any other means of control. This was only one of many attempts on my life. Any other readers have similar experiences with their siblings?”

Gerhard Engleitner of Hurstville applauds the idea of introducing synchronised javelin (C8). “What would make it even more interesting is to throw from opposite ends of the field.”

Allan Roberts of Dulwich Hill offers more sports that could take on the synchronised format (C8). “What about synchronised boxing? Or, with all the spinning they do, synchronised hammer throw? Relays could be expanded to sports other than athletics, cycling and swimming. A weightlifting relay: the first competitor has to lift it above their head, then the team passes it down the line without dropping it.”

Having lived in Bingara (C8) in 1970 when her husband owned the local newsagency, Lorraine Batterham of Glenmore Park was intrigued by Libby Porter’s flight, as she does not remember any commercial flights operating at the time. “The morning Sydney papers came by truck overnight, but the afternoon Sydney papers were delivered by a small plane which landed on the dirt tarmac of a property outside the town. Perhaps whoever had the contract to deliver the papers was doing kind deeds as a sideline?”

Vince Russo, usually of Woonona, writes from his travels in Europe that he and his wife experienced travel dramas (C8) only last week. “We were booked for a direct train from France to Madrid, but unbeknownst to us there was industrial action taking place in the French rail system, causing us to have to make numerous train changes. It was nightfall when we were on the last train to connect to the 11.00 pm at Madrid, and the conductor who checked our tickets said that we would not make the 11.00pm train on which we were booked. He returned shortly after and said he had spoken to the train driver who would speed up the train to arrive in time. We caught the train that departed at 11.05pm. Vive la France!”
