“Tom Cruise wants to make Mission Impossible films until he’s 80,” notes Lyn Langtry of East Ryde. “I want to still be doing my pump class when I’m 80. Any other 80 aspirations out there?”
Evan Coutts’ potentially entertaining demise (C8) is not lost on Joshua Steele of Denhams Beach: “At the National Gallery’s Cressida Campbell exhibition, I purchased a glasses cleaning cloth from the gift shop, depicting a view from a car interior (one of Campbell’s works). Upon checking my bank account, it had classified the purchase as ‘Transport’.”
The regal rock manifest (C8) continues to grow here, with Pete Macourt of Balgowlah Heights pointing out a disregard for the home-grown: “After over 45 years of reading Column 8, making me a mere toddler besides many readers, I feel I should add some local flavour to this discussion. Australia’s King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, formed in 2010 in Bleak City have been a prolific creator of contemporary music. At last count, in their 13-year existence, they count 48 separate releases, including 24 studio albums and 15 live albums - how they were not first on this list of rock and roll royalty escapes me.” Tim Nicholas of Middle Cove and Ann Madsen of Mount Annan also requested The Gizz be added to the ticket, with Ann also plugging Yolngu surf rock exponents King Stingray who have the DNA of Australian music royalty, Yothu Yindi, in their ranks.
“I’ve reached a new level in time-wasting pursuits,” announces Peter Lamrock of Berowra. “With help from Google Earth, I found the exact opposite location (latitude and longitude-wise) to my Sydney house on the other side of the earth. I was hoping to contact the homeowner at that location and start a sister house/sister town sort of relationship. Sadly, that exact location is in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea just off the coast of Crete. There go my chances of free accommodation.”
Bill Hamilton of Gordon wonders if ex-minister Stuart Robert “will be the first to be NACCer’d?”
Speaking of Gordon, Allan Garrick of Balmain “can remember years ago waiting for a train at Town Hall Station. A train with the destination ‘Gordon’ on the front carriage pulled up. I heard a comment from a US group (C8) standing near me: ‘Isn’t this nice, they give their trains names here, this one is called Gordon’.” Sure you weren’t on Sir Topham Hatt’s railway?
