Concertgoers’ Lex education

Like many of us, Andrew Cohen of Glebe was saddened by the death of Bullpitt-baiting actor and director Lex “the Swine” Marinos, but he did grow tired of Lex “and his mates including Ted Robinson and Glenn A. Baker managing to get front-row seats to many of the best rock concerts in the 1970s. All are still my heroes, but us teen fans who had queued for, at best, second-row seats, would squabble over who would sit directly behind Lex as his huge Afro effectively blocked one’s view.”

“Serin Lynn (C8) the Bermuda Triangle does still exist,” claims Peter Miniutti of Ashbury. “According to Gus Gould it is centred around Shark Park in the Shire.” Geoff Nilon of Mascot has another angle: “They haven’t squared the Bermuda Triangle. It’s just the circle of life.”

“With so much Sydney real estate now advertised as having a ‘Hamptons-like vibe’ or other nebulous Hamptons associations (C8), I have to ask, what is a Hampton and where can I get one?” enquires Rob Baxter of Naremburn.

Coral Button of North Epping is the latest to present a (near) theatrical mishap (C8): “In 1986 Rex Harrison and Claudette Colbert, both in their eighties, were appearing in Sydney in a light-as-a-feather piece of froth called Aren’t We All. Things started well when they arrived on stage to an ovation, but during a longish scene in which he had no lines, Rex fell into a light nap. The audience held its breath. But it needn’t have worried. At his cue, Rex awoke gracefully and delivered his line flawlessly. All class.” As he said around this time: “I’m now at the age where I’ve got to prove that I’m just as good as I never was.”

“I recall two incidents in the same production of Macbeth at the Newtown Theatre in the 1950s,” claims Craig Lilienthal of Wollstonecraft. “First, a goblet, thrown to the floor, rolled slowly down to the cheers of the student audience, before stopping short of the edge of the stage. Then, during the battle between Macbeth and McDuff, McDuff dropped his sword and Macbeth had to hold off long enough for him to retrieve said weapon and complete the carnage.”

“Surely, I’m not the only one who feasted their eyes upon Tuesday’s Good Food Short Black item about the new CEO of Hunter Street Hospitality,” says Allan Gibson of Cherrybrook. “One Frank Tucker!”
