Claire was a breath away from sleep when Vikki whispered, “Hear that?”
“Huh?” Claire groaned.
“There’s a f---in’ mozzie,” Vikki said, adding, “Can I turn the light on?”
Before Claire could reply, light filled the room.
“Jesus!” she said.
While she pulled a pillow over her face, Vikki stood on the mattress.
“Can you see it?” she asked.
“I can’t see a f---in’ thing,” Claire grumbled. “You’ve blinded me!” Irritated, Claire turned face down.
Meanwhile, Vikki, still as a sniper, scanned the room, murmuring, “Come to Mama …” Then she saw it.
On Claire’s back.
“Claire-Bear? Don’t … move …”
