Landscape designer Paul Bangay’s own extraordinary garden could be yours

Renowned landscape designer Paul Bangay is selling his home outside Melbourne, an estate set in stunning gardens he describes as his “life’s greatest work”.

Stonefields is set on about 16 hectares in Denver, between Kyneton and Daylesford, and has been listed with price hopes of $8 million to $8.8 million.

It last traded in 2004 for $320,000, records show, and the designer has transformed the site from a bare paddock into grand gardens inspired by his world travels, with stately oak trees, a hilltop pool, a Tuscan-inspired main house with dramatic interiors plus guest house and private office.

Now the gardens are mature, Bangay now hopes to find another opportunity nearby to create a new dream home.

“It’s a very traumatic day for us. It has been a very long process of making this decision,” Bangay told The Age.

He said it was frustrating to not be able to do anything more to the gardens now they are established, but plans a new project that will become their forever home.

He hopes the new owner will be someone who loves gardens and realises how valuable it is to have 20 years of garden growth on offer, rather than new plantings that take time to become established.

“We are not leaving the region,” he said, adding the conditions are ideal for gardens in Victoria’s Central Highlands. “It is still very hard.”

The home is listed through Forbes Global Properties’ Michael Gibson, Robert Fletcher, Tracey Atkins and Rae Mano.

Gibson has already had enquiry and said there is not another home quite like it in Australia, adding it could suit an owner-occupier or someone looking for a country retreat.

“Paul’s vision for the property and the implementation of it is something that has come from someone who has travelled extensively around the world looking at the most beautiful gardens,” he said. “And he has created one in Victoria.”
