‘I won’t be able to play in the US’: Djokovic barred, withdraws from Indian Wells

By Sam Phillips

Health authorities have blocked Novak Djokovic from entering the United States, and the world No.2 has subsequently withdrawn from a pair of major American tournaments.

Djokovic was part of Wednesday’s Indian Wells draw, but tournament organisers soon revealed his participation in the tournament was unclear, given the CDC had not yet approved his entry into the country.

With the tournament now underway and Djokovic due to play this weekend, the Serbian superstar took to Twitter to confirm his absence from the American hardcourt swing.

“While I was automatically listed in the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells) and Miami Open draw, I knew it would be unlikely I’d be able to travel,” Djokovic said.

“The CDC has confirmed that regulations won’t be changing, so I won’t be able to play in the US.

“Good luck to those playing in these great tournaments.”

Djokovic, who recently dropped to No.2 in the ATP rankings, has played in only one tournament so far in 2022 because he has not received any vaccinations to protect against COVID-19. He was deported from Australia in January and was not allowed to try to defend his title at Melbourne Park.

Indian Wells also confirmed Djokovic’s absence.

“As the next player in line to be seeded, Grigor Dimitrov will move into Djokovic’s space in the draw, and a lucky loser from qualifying will move into Dimitrov’s space in the draw once qualifying is complete.”

It’s the second time this year Djokovic has been forced to withdraw from a tournament at the 11th hour, following the saga that engulfed the Australian Open.

Djokovic will almost certainly make his next appearance on tour next month, at the Monte Carlo Masters.

While Djokovic will take no part at Indian Wells, there was good news for Thanasi Kokkinakis.

The new Australian Open doubles champion won his way into the main draw in California with a 7-6, 7-5 win against Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the final round of qualifying.

Kokkinakis will also reunite with Nick Kyrgios in the men’s doubles for the first time since their success at Melbourne Park.
