Kirin J Callinan will face court after allegedly exposing himself on the ARIA red carpet last year.

As he walked the carpet, he turned to face photographers and posed before briefly lifting the front of the kilt, allegedly exposing himself to the media.

NSW Police said they issued the 31-year-old with a Future Court Attendance Notice on December 8 and charged him with wilful and obscene exposure in/near public place.

Callinan has faced a mixed reaction following the incident with one festival moving to drop the singer from their lineup while another added him to their lineup.

Party in the Paddock organisers added Callinan to their festival lineup following the incident, saying they extended a special invitation to the singer.

"We judge Kirin not by a single, spontaneous moment of profanity but rather by a decade of provocative and brilliant work," they said in a statement.

"Kirin J Callinan is rightfully recognised internationally as a master musician as well as a bold and brilliant warrior for originality and diversity and we welcome him to The Paddock this Saturday night."

Callinan was however removed from the 2018 Laneway Festival lineup following his red carpet stunt although organisers did not officially comment on the removal.

He still attended the event, even performing on stage with friend Mac DeMarco although its unclear if organisers were made aware of his appearance in advance.

Callinan will face Downing Centre Local Court over his alleged exposure on February 21.
