Vic govt makes payout to protestors

A secret $700,000 out-of-court settlement between the Victorian government, state police and injured S11 protesters was made official in a Melbourne court on Thursday.

Victorian County Court judge Timothy Holt struck out a civil claim made by around 40 demonstrators after an out-of-court settlement was reached with police and the government.

Judge Holt made no order for costs.

The payout is to be made to demonstrators injured outside the World Economic Forum at Melbourne's Crown Casino in September 2000.

The payout is divided between the protesters, including comedian Rod Quantock and serial activist Ciaron O'Reilly, and their lawyers Slater and Gordon.

Premier Steve Bracks has defended the payout and has said it will not set a precedent that could apply to other violent protests, such as the recent G20 clashes with police, also in Melbourne.
