The type of clothing this designer thinks should be banned on planes

Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, fashion designer Erin Deering.

Erin Deering says her favourite fashion era is Sienna Miller in the early-2000s.

How would you describe your personal style? I switch between bold, with clashing textures and colours to create something playful and unexpected, and a pared-back look, depending on my mood.

What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A pair of vintage Levi’s I’ve had for maybe 10 years. I’m not a hoarder, I like to keep my wardrobe fresh, but there are some regrets, like the fluffy cream Celine coat I sold. I think about it often.

And the most recent addition? I bought a black David Koma dress for my husband’s 40th. It was a big purchase but I’ll wear it again and again.

What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? A perfectly fitting tee, a black Beare Park blazer and a fun, mid-height shoe such as Totême’s silver kitten heel.

What would you wear … on a first date? Levi’s, a Deering white tee and a Saint Laurent blazer with some fun sunglasses and a strong earring … on a plane? A loose tailored pant, tank top and cashmere sweater with a sneaker or loafer. Tight clothes on planes should be illegal … on the red carpet? I despise event dressing but anything by Schiaparelli will more than suffice.

What’s your favourite fashion era? The Sienna Miller early-2000s era. I was obsessed with her effortless boho-chic aesthetic; she portrayed a lifestyle that seemed so fun.

Do you have a favourite designer? Matthieu Blazy of Bottega Veneta and Daniel Roseberry of Schiaparelli are both pushing the boundaries while honouring their brand’s heritage. It’s pure magic.

What’s your fragrance of choice? Tulita perfumes have different properties to enhance your mood andI wear “Divya”, “Vikasa” or “Agati” depending on what I feel I need that day. Or I’ll wear “R Oil” by The Row.

Any go-to jewellery? My Jessica McCormack and Lucy Folk weddings rings and a Lucy Folk pendant necklace.

Can you remember a favourite outfit when you were a child? I recall dressing up as a bride when I was seven in a white swimsuit and tulle skirt. I felt so pretty and cute. I was nervous to wear it in front of my cousin’s boyfriend because I thought he’d fall in love with me.

What was your first fashion moment? It was 1998, I was 13 and very unsure of my style. I’d copy my older sister’s grungy looks even though it didn’t feel like me. I remember seeing a Portman’s billboard of a model in a white boat-neck top and khaki pedal pushers. I was obsessed. Mum bought me the outfit and there was no turning back. Fashion was for me.

And your worst fashion mistake? All looks are worth their moment in the sun. If I loved it at the time, it’s not a mistake, even if it didn’t age well.

What’s on your wish list? I covet antique jewellery – big, bold pieces with diamonds, emeralds… I just try them on and dream.

Is there something you would never wear? Skinny jeans.

Is there a current fashion trend you like? I love an accessory trend – gloves were fun. And a shout out to Chloé for bringing boho back.

What do you sleep in? Bonds undies.

What shoes do you wear most often? Old black Yeezy sneakers, usually to the gym.

Do you have a favourite fashion icon? Other than Sienna Miller, I recently discovered J.Crew creative director Olympia Gayot, who is extremely chic.

What do you wear on a typical working day? I’m busy, so I’m leaning into a uniform of the Deering “Andiamo” pant, Renggli long-sleeve top, a coat and Khaite or Alaïa flats.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? Off-duty is hard for me, but I usually gravitate towards an oversized tee and shorts in the warmer months. In winter, I’ll wear a huge The Row coat to cover up a lazy look. Comfort is key, so my New Balance x Miu Miu sneakers.
