Candice Warner: ‘I don’t care for trends when it comes to my sneakers’
By Georgie Gordon
Each week, we quiz a prominent person about their style and the inspiration behind it. Ahead, former professional Ironwoman and author, Candice Warner.
How would you describe your style? I’m always on the move – school pick-up, exercise, work – so comfort and practicality are what I look for.
What’s the oldest thing in your wardrobe? A red trench coat I bought 15 years ago. I had to have it, I went around all the stores looking for it … and I think I’ve worn it once.
And the most recent addition? A pair of Scanlan Theodore wide-leg pants. They’re a staple for me.
What’s your favourite fashion era? I love the classic fashion of the 1960s, like Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Timeless pieces.
What are the three essential items in your wardrobe? A pair of camel-coloured pumps that go with everything. My straight-leg light denim Zara jeans, which I wear all the time and always get complimented on. And a nice crisp white shirt; whether I wear it with my jeans, Scanlan Theodore pants or an Aje black leather skirt, it always looks good.
What would you wear …
… on a first date? A little black dress and heels.
… on a plane? Comfortable black Camilla and Marc pants with a tee and sneakers.
… on the red carpet? My favourite look was the Cappellazzo Couture gold dress I wore to the Australian Cricket Awards this year. It was about trying to look classy and elegant.
What’s your favourite fragrance? My husband [cricketer David Warner] is huge on perfume, on what’s new and what’s coming out. He loves it. One of my favourites is “Attrape-Rêves” by Louis Vuitton, a birthday gift. It reminds me of David and the kids.
Any go-to jewellery? An Apple watch and a little gold paperclip- chain necklace from Shannakian.
Can you remember a favourite outfit from when you were a child? Hypercolor T-shirts and a pair of Reebok high-tops my mum and dad brought me back from Hawaii when I was 10 years old. I thought they were the coolest things ever.
What was your first fashion moment? It was probably in 2018 when I wore an orange neoprene gown to the Allan Border Medal with my husband. It was the first time I felt like I owned the dress. Growing up as a tomboy, I had never felt comfortable in anything girly like that before. It was a turning point.
And your worst fashion mistake? Not wearing the right underwear on the red carpet. Sometimes you get photographed and it doesn’t turn out the way you planned.
What’s at the top of your wish list? The burnt orange “Vasara” coat from Camilla and Marc’s new collection. The cut and colour are incredible.
Is there anything you’d never wear? Anything with really puffy sleeves. It looks fantastic on other people but because of my broad shoulders I feel like Anne of Green Gables when I try to pull it off.
Is there a current trend you like? Yes, 1990s minimalism. Jeans or a tailored pant with a sneaker – I love that simple, easy-to-wear look.
What shoes do you wear most often? Nike trainers. I don’t care for trends when it comes to my sneakers, it’s just what’s practical and good for my back. I wear a lot of kitten heels; I’m a similar height to my husband, so I don’t wear really high heels.
Who’s your favourite fashion icon? I love watching what the Kardashians wear, especially Kim and Kendall Jenner. They rarely get it wrong and whatever they wear, they wear it with confidence. It’s always cool, effortless and on point.
What do you wear on a typical working day? If I’m in the studio at Triple M it’s pants, a plain tee and blazer with ballet flats or a kitten heel.
What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? I’m all about the matching tracksuit on a Sunday.
