And Just Like That … Carrie and Aiden have reunited (again) for season three

It’s summer in the city and the women of Sex and the City are back for season three of the reboot And Just Like That … The trailer teases (more) new beginnings for Carrie, Charlotte and Miranda and the return (again) of Aiden, who seems to have figured out the 1.5-hour flight (or six-hour drive) from his home in Norfolk, Virginia, to New York City isn’t so bad after all.

Who’s in it?

The original ladies – Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) – plus Anthony (Mario Cantone) and Harry (Evan Handler) and the new regulars Lisa (Nicole Ari Parker) and Seema (Sarita Choudhury). Plus assorted children and the husband of Lisa, whose name no one can ever remember (OK, it’s Herbert, played by Christopher Jackson).

And Aidan?

Yeah, he’s back. Despite high-tailing it outta the city at the end of season two – and asking Carrie to wait for him for five years! – Aidan (John Corbett) has re-emerged. Thankfully, he’s swapped that weird-belted jacket for flannie (he lives in the country, remember). Will they break up again? Probably. Especially as Carrie has a hot new neighbour she’s vibing with.

What about the cat?

Yep, the cat, Shoe, which was adopted in real-life by Parker and renamed Lotus, is back.

Despite her season two cameo, Samantha (Kim Cattrall) does not return in season three.

Who’s missing?

A brief phone call at the end of season two between Carrie and Samantha (Kim Cattrall) raised hopes that everyone’s favourite “try-sexual” would return in season three, but no. Samantha is still in a city far, far away from her former besties, living it up in London.

It’s not surprising considering Parker and Cattrall have, apparently, had a falling out over money, with Cattrall calling it a “toxic relationship”.

That sounds like it would make a great plot on The White Lotus. Maybe there’s room for a crossover episode ...

Great idea! Handily, there are Four Seasons hotels in both New York and London. Someone tell Mike White.

Who else is missing?

Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez), Miranda’s former girlfriend and possibly the most disliked new character on the show, and Professor Nya Wallace (Karen Pittman), the one-time flatmate of Miranda, are not returning. Was it something Miranda said? More likely it was something Che said during one of their terrible stand-up sets.

Che Diaz (Sara Ramirez) is out of the picture for good in season three of And Just Like That … (but the cat, Shoe, stays).

And Steve?

True, he’s not in the trailer. But despite fan theories that Miranda’s former husband, Steve (David Eigenberg), will die this season, there have been photos of him on set. Of course, it could very well be the ghost of Steve. After all, Miranda once thought she had a ghost in her apartment (yes, that was an actual episode).

What’s going on?

In short, Aiden and Carrie are still together (even though he asked her to wait FIVE years, c’mon!) and Carrie is turning her hand to fiction (Sex and the Cauldron, anyone?). Miranda is now eyeing off Joy (Dolly Wells, now a series regular) while enjoying her new job as some type of human rights spokesperson. Charlotte, of course, is dancing in a nightclub with a martini while managing her teenagers.

Carrie’s house cost how much?

At the end of season two, Carrie swapped her beloved brownstone apartment in the West Village for an enormous $US5 million ($7.8 million) four-bedroom townhouse in Gramercy Park, as Aiden (whatta guy!) had complained her old brownstone apartment reminded him of Big (Chris Noth). It’s no small shift, as so much of Sex and the City’s DNA comes from that one-bedroom apartment with its overstuffed closet. Can the new address replicate the magic of the old address? It remains to be seen, but it’s good to know that even a $US5 million townhouse isn’t safe from New York City’s rat plague.

And Just Like That … streams on Max from May 30.
