Collingwood champion Dane Swan is hopeful the foot and leg fractures he suffered in Saturday night's thrashing by the Swans in Sydney will not end his AFL career.
Swan, 32, broke his fibula and a bone in his foot during the Pies' 80-point loss at the SCG. While it remains unclear how long he will be on the sidelines, the fractures are likely to keep the 2011 Brownlow medallist out of action for much of the 2016 season.
The 2010 premiership hero is out of contract at season's end, and has previously declared that this could be his final campaign.
While the 258-game veteran conceded there was some uncertainty surrounding his condition, he remained reasonably upbeat on arrival at Melbourne Airport on Sunday.
"I hope that's not my last game but we'll see how we go," Swan said.
"Hopefully not, but if I'm out for the year or whatever it is then I'll have a think about it. But that's the worst case scenario."
Asked how he was coping with the frustration of a serious injury just minutes into a new season, Swan was circumspect.
"It's never happened to me before. It is what it is. I'll just deal with it, I'll keep busy and go about things as I usually do.
"I don't know what I don't know, and I don't know what it is. However long I'm out, I'm out. We can't do much about it so we'll just carry on."
