US markets drop again after recovery

NEW YORK - US markets fell slightly in choppy trading, reversing the prior session's modest recovery, with investors still concerned about Tuesday's sharp equity sell-off.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 7.29 points to 12,261.34 and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 1.76 points at 1,408.58. The Nasdaq Composite Index was down 2.79 points at 2,413.36.

LONDON - UK stocks fell in volatile trade after steep falls in world markets. The FTSE 100 index lost 55.5 points to 6,116.

FRANKFURT - The DAX index dropped 75.2 points to 6,640.24.

PARIS - The CAC-40 index declined 57.92 points to 5,458.4.

TOKYO - The Nikkei average fell as exporters like Toyota Motor Corporation weakened on concerns about slowing US economic growth. The Nikkei reversed 150.61 points to 17,453.51.

HONG KONG - Stocks fell as sharp falls in Chinese mainland-listed A shares triggered a late sell-off. The benchmark Hang Seng Index tumbled 304.91 points to 19,346.60.

WELLINGTON - NZ shares rose, with Fletcher Building the most notable stock to rebound following gains on Wall Street. The benchmark NZSX-50 index lifted 11.71 points to 4048.83.
