Destinations to shake up your next cruise holiday
Sponsored by Norwegian Cruise Line
By James Dampney
When it comes to holiday destinations, it would be difficult to find more diverse, historic and stunningly beautiful locations than those you can discover across Asia, from the peaks of Japan through to the islands of the Philippines.
It also lies well within reach of Australians and, with so many islands, one of the great ways to explore it is via a cruise ship. The industry is booming once more and there are some superb Asian getaways on offer through operators such as Norwegian Cruise Line which will make its long-awaited return to Asia after three years with the newly refurbished Norwegian Jewel, designed to allow travellers to immerse themselves in the history and culture of the region’s most unique ports.
And as well as the peace of mind that comes with unpacking your suitcase just one time, cruises mix on-board ease and enjoyment with the ability to visit multiple destinations.
For seasoned explorers, whether solo sojourners, couples or family groups, uncovering new places to visit is half the fun. Here are a few you may not have considered before – but should.
Island hopping in Japan
The tranquility of Oshima Island is beloved by many fans of Japan, who head to Naze (also known as Amami City) to experience its local traditions and mouth-watering cuisine, and then let their cares slip away at its postcard perfect beaches, or with a trek into its dense jungle.
Paired with charming Naha in nearby Okinawa, these hotspots give a taste of Japan that contrast beautifully with the buzz of cities such as Tokyo and Nagoya.
The Lotus Pond in Kaohsiung
Taiwan’s Kaohsiung City is home to the spectacular Lotus Pond, which boasts a number of temples, historic ruins and the famous Dragon and Tiger Pagodas. Entering through the dragon’s throat and exiting via the tiger’s mouth is a symbol of turning bad luck to good fortune at this popular attraction.
The underground river of Puerto Princesa
When it comes to the Philippines, as well as taking in the colonial history in the capital of Manila or some of the whitest sand you’ve ever seen on Boracay, the adventurous are highly recommended to visit Palawan to experience the breathtaking Subterranean River National Park near Puerto Princesa.
The UNESCO World Heritage-listed underground river houses channels and secret chambers – some up to 60 metres high – and spectacular limestone karst formations.
Brunei’s Water Village
Located on the island of Borneo, the tiny country of Brunei might take up fewer than 6,000 square kilometres of land, much of it covered in tropical rainforests, but it still packs an enormous cultural punch.
With its 29 gold-topped domes, the Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque will grab your attention, while for something completely different, Kampung Ayer is fascinating. This water village is considered the world’s largest settlement on stilts, and can be navigated by water taxi.
These are just some of the experiences you will never forget in Japan and South East Asia, and are all able to be visited thanks to Norwegian Cruise Line. Its revitalised Norwegian Jewel features a range of spacious staterooms and suites, sophisticated bars, diverse dining options and restaurants and plenty of spaces where you can unwind and enjoy the ever-changing views.
Get active with a game of basketball, indulge in wellness at Mandara Spa, and take in some show-stopping entertainment. As a smaller ship, Norwegian Jewel is able to sail to Asia’s lesser visited ports, for under-the-radar destinations such as the ones mentioned here.
With onboard experiences a perfect match for port-rich itineraries in beautiful destinations such as Japan and South East Asia, the cruise life puts everything at your feet. Why not step aboard?
