Hands up if you need a break – a totally rejuvenating break. The sort of holiday that leaves you feeling refreshed, revived and glad to be alive.

As the world gets more fractious and fractured, household budgets get tighter, and the future looks bleak, it is no wonder that wellness holidays are booming. The sector is set to generate $US1 billion in revenue this year, according to the Global Wellness Institute.

Here’s the thing, though. Whether you are looking for a soul-soothing escape or just to feel better in your body, a spa stay is not the only option. Wellness doesn’t have to be about massages and cryotherapy. It can also be about memorable moments in extraordinary surroundings.

A hike through a forest of towering trees can leave you feeling rejuvenated in both body and mind, while watching as a sunrise silhouettes mighty mountain peaks may give you a boost for the rest of the day. And then there are the cultures that are so welcoming, a smile spreads across your face as soon as you arrive.

When you are looking for a holiday that leaves you feeling better than when you arrived, some destinations are surefire winners.

Whether it is down to their exhilarating outdoor activities, their deep spiritual practices or simply their awe-inspiring beauty, these places are guaranteed to get you feeling good.

RAKxa Wellness Resort is the reigning champion of wellness retreats.

RAKxa Wellness Resort is the reigning champion of wellness retreats.

Feel-good factor What really makes us happy? The practice of mindfulness – focusing on the present moment – plays an important role, according to the latest scientific research. The gentle rituals of Thai culture are a blueprint for paying attention to what’s in front of you here and now.
Tell me more The graciousness of Thai culture comes from acknowledging the power of small gestures. You can see it when you check in at your hotel: the wai (palms together, head bowed) greeting, the cold towel, the care with which they will hand back your credit card after registering it. Add in a wellness-focused culture – there’s a reason some of the best spas in the world are found here – and you have a country that helps you reset.
Don’t miss Spa fans know there is nothing like a Thai massage for ironing out the kinks. If that much pressure point release is too intense for you, try a foot massage instead. It’s the same technique but over a limited area.
Make it happen Cheap and cheerful massages are great but if you want a top to toe overhaul RAKxa Wellness, set in the lush green belt surrounding Bangkok, is the reigning champion of wellness retreats, with its blend of medical analysis and holistic healing. Austria

Naturhotel Forsthofgut in the SalzburgerLand region of Austria.

Feel-good factor Every day in the Alps is a good day to be alive. Fill your lungs with that fresh mountain air, strap on the skis and slalom down the hill – or if you are visiting in summer, hike or bike to an Alpine lake where you can cool off in the pristine waters.
Tell me more If you thought the Austrian idea of wellness was an extra dollop of whipped cream with your apple strudel, think again. Austrians balance out their active lifestyles with a strong appreciation of an invigorating Alpine spa.
Don’t miss Can lying still in a cave give you a health boost? It can at Gasteiner Heilstollen, a cave complex south of Salzburg rich in natural radon gas, which has been proven to help everything from inflammatory issues to skin diseases.
Make it happen It is hard to name the biggest attraction at Naturhotel Forsthofgut in the SalzburgerLand region. Is it the scenic mountain surrounds or the 5700-square-metre spa? A session in the old-school wood-fired sauna, where you can exfoliate your skin using birch branches from the surrounding forest, is bracing. See forsthofgut.at; austria.info

Feel-good factor When you really want to escape the everyday, Bhutan takes some beating. The soaring Himalayan peaks are guaranteed to drag your eyes away from your phone and towards the horizon, while deep spirituality permeates every aspect of life in this Buddhist kingdom.
Tell me more Few destinations balance body and soul as well as Bhutan. The hiking here is simply spectacular, and many of the most scenic hikes will lead you to Buddhist temples, including the spectacular Tiger’s Nest, which seems to hang off a sheer cliff face. Learning meditation from a Buddhist monk is another great way to balance yourself, while planting trees as part of the country’s reforestation effort is a way to leave a lasting impact.
Don’t miss Several cultures include bathing rituals in their wellbeing routines but Bhutan’s traditional baths have some little touches – such as aromatic herbs in the water, which is heated by fire-warmed stones – that set it apart.

Feel-good factor Long before fashion designers Giorgio Armani and Miuccia Prada came along, Italians already had a reputation for injecting beauty into every aspect of life. Our Habitas Atacama has a menu with plenty of plant-based options.

Feel-good factor In Chile’s capital Santiago, locals boast about being able to visit the beach in the morning and hit the ski slopes in the afternoon – but there’s a lot more where that came from. The diverse terrain is Chile’s greatest gift, giving nature lovers endless landscapes to explore.
Tell me more Head to the north of the country for dramatic volcanic craters and lava fields, or to the south to gaze at glaciers, icebergs and awe-inspiring ice fields. Feel-good factor Occasionally we all need a touch of the marvellous in our lives, and the natural wonders of the conservation-minded Micronesian island nation of Palau are simply extraordinary. We also love the fact that in a country where only eight out of 300-plus islands are inhabited, life always unfolds in the slow lane.

Tell me more The translucent waters of Palau are home to some of the world’s most stunning coral reefs, but there are plenty of other ways to unwind here. Trek through verdant jungle to a cascading waterfall or a marine lake where you can swim with countless (stingless) jellyfish, or marvel at ancient rock carvings and standing stones.
