A disappointing end to the evening for team Australia, who have been eliminated from the 2025 United Cup.

Despite their win in the mixed doubles and a valiant effort from de Minaur against Billy Harris in the men’s singles, it wasn’t enough to keep them in the competition.

Thank you for joining our live coverage of the 2025 United Cup! Stay tuned for more as we enter the quarter-finals tomorrow.

Goodnight.

Ending in sight

By Billie Eder

For those who are still with us, we’re at the end of Australia’s United Cup campaign.

Nicholls and Broom led Gadecki and de Minaur 5-4 in the second set, but the Australians hit back to seal the set in a tiebreak and win the match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3).

It was all to no avail though as they have conceded too many games to sneak into the quarter-finals.

Why Great Britain will play Poland

By Billie Eder

A bit of a weird one, with Australian duo Olivia Gadecki and Alex de Minaur playing for nothing out there, but at least the crowd are still enjoying it.

For those who have been following the draw closely, Poland were technically meant to play the best runners-up tomorrow night, but they will instead play Great Britain from 5:30pm. That’s because Czechia are the best runners-up, and Czechia and Poland faced each other just this morning. In the rules, teams aren’t allowed to play a team in the quarter-finals that they faced in the group stage.

Azarenka victorious in Brisbane over valiant Joint

By Marc McGowan

Victoria Azarenka swung that match viciously - and quickly - in her favour, claiming the last three games to snatch a 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 victory over Australia’s Maya Joint.

Joint was a break up in the final set, and was hugely impressive, but she exits the Brisbane International in the second round.

After losing three of their first five matches, Australia needed a miracle in the mixed doubles to progress as the best runners-up.

Australia needed to win this match, while also conceding four games or fewer to progress.

But Australia’s hopes of a quarter-finals appearance ended in the second set when they lost their fifth game.

The result means Great Britain will face Poland in tomorrow’s quarter-finals, and Czechia will play Italy on Friday.

Australia’s one-game dilemma

By Billie Eder

This is it, if Australia lose one more game, they’re out of the 2025 United Cup.

All it took was for Great Britain to hold their serve, and Australia are on the cusp of defeat.

Australia need to win six straight games to progress.

Aussie 18-year-old Maya Joint is on the verge of the biggest win in her burgeoning career.

Her composure has been incredibly impressive in this final set, and she now owns the break at 4-3 over former world No.1 Victoria Azarenka. Hardest job is still to come

One-game buffer for team Australia heading into the second set

By Billie Eder

Alex de Minaur serves out the set and Australia are still alive in this tournament.

The home team will still need to win the second set 6-1 to progress, but they’ve given themselves a fighting chance.

Quarter-finals chance dwindling for home team

By Billie Eder

Things aren’t looking good for Australia.

We’re currently 3-3 in the second set, and the prospect of Australia making the quarter-finals looks near impossible.

Two more games to Great Britain and Australia are done.
