Spoon Bowl: Thank heavens it is only one round a year

By Christian Nicolussi

Campbelltown Stadium: The Benny Hill theme song should have played the entire 80 minutes. There were so many embarrassing moments during Friday night’s Spoon Bowl.

There were kicks out on the full, dodgy captain’s challenges, awful tackles, players dropping off players thinking they were held, and silly passes off the ground in the in-goal. Even the ballboys had a rough night when they kicked two balls onto the field at one stage, then left the Tigers waiting for a ball when ready to kick off.

In the end, Parramatta won 60-26 against the Wests Tigers. They finished with 14 men after Dylan Brown suffered a knee injury, as did Will Penisini, while Daejarn Asi underwent a head injury assessment. The Eels ran a little harder, played the ball a little faster, and simply wanted the win more.

Reagan Campbell-Gillard kicked the final goal of the game, which suggests a move to St George Illawarra might actually happen over the summer.

The Tigers looked flat from the opening set with players walking in back play.

The 17,311 fans who travelled to Campbelltown Sports Stadium had plenty of belief their side could avoid a third-straight wooden spoon.

The Tigers were chasing their first hat-trick of wins since 2018. Lachie Galvin and Api Koroisau and backrower Samuela Fainu had proven there was hope for the Tigers after all.

What a disappointing finish. Benji Marshall was one of the great entertainers, but the first-year coach would have cringed watching his players try to score off every set.

You could understand the desperation late in the game when chasing points, but not in the early exchanges.

They lost Api Koroisau to the sin-bin for a lifting tackle on Eels fullback Clint Gutherson, and the Eels run in three tries. It was the 16th time the Tigers had a player sent to the bin this year. Discipline needs to be something Marshall addresses over the off-season.

There was a novelty factor early, and those inside the ground on a warm September night were prepared to ignore the errors if it meant a little bit of entertainment. But the further Parramatta pulled clear on the scoreboard, the more painful the night became.

The M5 Motorway was a car park for most commuters coming from the city before the game. And to think they paid plenty in tolls for this privilege.

Jarome Luai and Sunia Turuva and Royce Hunt and Jack Bird are coming next year. If we are being fair dinkum, they will need another 12 months to build.

When Jason Ryles takes the reins at Parramatta, he will welcome plenty of star cavalry back, including Mitchell Moses.

Spoon Bowl. Thank heavens it is only one round a year.

Full-time: Eels 60 Tigers 26 and a third straight wooden spoon

And finally, after 16 tries, who knows how many errors and the most Spoon Bowl affair you could have imagined, mercy. For Tigers fans at least.

60-26 it finishes up with one last try to Charlie Staines, and a third wooden spoon is the Tigers and the Tigers alone.

All eyes now over to the biggest rivalry in the game - the Roosters and Rabbitohs with plenty to watch for. Not least how the Tricolours adjust after losing their halfback and hooker to season-ending ACL ruptures, and also the NRL debut of Mark Nawaqanitawase. Catch all the action right here.

Try: RCG gets a farewell goal as Eels crack 60

And as Joey Lussick scrambles onto a grubber for yet another try, Reg Campbell-Gillard is bullied into taking the conversion by his teammates.

He hasn’t actually announced he’s leaving the club yet by the way. But yeah, definitely is. The big fella nails the shot from in front. Love to see it.

Tries: Eels crack 50 with RCG four-pointer

Genuinely, please get through it Parra. Daejarn Asi is off for a HIA and David Klemmer is on report for a hit on Joey Lussick. So the Eels have Dylan Brown and Will Penisini off with knee injuries, and the Tigers have also tossed their latest debutant Tony Sukkar out there too.

He threatens with one of his first touches, one of their rare attacking chances this half, and Isaiah Papalii is able to force his way over from close range soon enough.

Parramatta resume regular programming soon enough, Campbell-Gillard hits and spins his way through a feeble attempted tackle on his line from Stefano Utoikamanu, and RCG has himself a likely farewell try. A celebratory ruffle of the moustache from Joe Ofahengaue, as you do.

Tries: Gutho rubs it in with celebration

Clint Gutherson scores on his birthday - congrats King, no wooden spoon for you. Just 16th place.

Carries on with a bit of ‘this is my house’ behaviour too after the Tigers simply just stopped when a pass off the ruck hit the deck and Gutherson strolled onto it and through the defence.

The Eels skipper is Johnny on the spot too a moment later when Alex Seyfarth is driven backwards into his own in-goal and shovels out a panicked pass that Gutherson latches onto.

Again Parramatta go cock-a-hoop and David Klemmer tells them to get stuffed. Melee ensues. Will Penisini is also off with a knee injury too. Just get through the last 10 minutes lads, please.

Sin bin: Koroisau marched for spear tackle, Brown off

Api Koroisau has got himself in some very hot water, he’s upended Gutherson onto his neck with a very dicey spear tackle and he’s been sin-binned.

It’s the 16th time a Tiger has been binned, and frankly, that could’ve easily been a send off too. No arguments at all from Api as he comes from the field, Dylan Brown joining him too as he succumbs to that knee issue.

And on the end of it, Cartwright snaffles another try on the end of a crossfield kick that had plenty of hands from both sides in it and the Bunker checking a knock on in the air before allowing it.

Flood gates then opening up with only 12 Tigers on the field, Maika Sivo terrorising young fullback Heath Mason once more as he chargesv over.

Try: The most Spoon Bowl play yet

There it is. The most Spoon Bowl play yet. I don’t even know how to describe that whole passage of play. I don’t know if I want to. Tigers scramble their way to a bomb, almost caught on the last. Maika Sivo cooks it. Can’t handle it. Tigers ball. Someone takes a dive in the Eels defensive line. Not sure why.

Then over to the left edge. There’s an awful pass out of dummy-half from Koroisau - his hands were grappled by Eels defenders, and the ball sits up for Latu Fainu to stroll through. Life in the Tigers yet and Dylan Brown stayed down with the trainer for a long time getting attention to a knee issue, but he’s up and about now.

Try: Eels strike 90 seconds after the break

What’s the matter Parra-matta? Not much right now, because they’re well on their way to that precious 16th place finish.

Ninety seconds into the second half, Latu Fainu throws a no-look inside ball for Lachie Galvin and Bryce Cartwright snaffles it - spotted it from a mile out. Cartwright into the backfield, Penisini even further into the backfield and over for his second try.

Asi’s conversion attempt just doesn’t swing back enough but it’s still a 16-point lead.
