SACHIN Tendulkar may be in the twilight of his storied career, but Australian bowlers may spend many summers yet bowling fruitlessly at the blade of a Tendulkar.
A month after hitting his first century - a match-winning 124 for Khar Gymkhana - Arjun Tendulkar, Sachin's 12-year-old son, has been named in the probables squad for the Mumbai under 14s.
A Tendulkar who can bowl is a genuine cause for concern. While the old man sends down the occasional over of handy spin, Tendulkar jnr is a left-arm quick. In a school game last year, he took 8-22, bowling a dozen overs unchanged and troubling batsmen with his late swing. But, despite the privileges of his surname and pedigree, Arjun is said to be a dedicated student.
''He's extremely hard-working, and doesn't shy away from a challenge, however difficult or exhausting,'' said coach Rajesh Sanil. ''He will turn up for matches regardless of how far the venue is from his home.''
