Martyn has another chance for glory

Damien Martyn batting with the tail on the last day in a tense finish against South Africa.

Does that sound familiar?

Martyn needs no reminding of the low point of his Test career, cut loose by selectors in 1993-94 after a square-drive led to his dismissal at the SCG in the second Test against the Kepler Wessels-led South Africans.

The visitors won by five runs, bowling Australia out for 111 chasing 117 to win after Martyn fell for six at 9-110.

Seven years the talented West Australian suffered for that stroke, and he was back in the doghouse last summer after a poor Ashes series.

Recalled for the tour of South Africa, 64-Test veteran Martyn is keen to show that 34 is the new 24 and that he is the right man for the job for the 2006-07 Ashes series.

With returns of 22, nine, 57, 15 not out and 21 in the series before yesterday, Martyn needed a score and he got it, 93 not out in Australia's 6-248 and needing 44 runs today for a 3-0 series sweep.

Martyn batted for four hours and 25 minutes, hitting 12 fours and showing both solid defence and flowing attacking strokes through the off-side.

The footwork and confidence not evident in England were on show yesterday despite the difficult batting conditions which suited the seam bowlers.

Martyn may find himself in the difficult position of having to take risks against the second new ball, which is due in 1.3 overs, because he may fear the tail won't last long and the concussed Justin Langer is unlikely to bat.

That would leave Martyn open for another SCG-type scene, caught out when the team is on the edge of victory.

But Martyn has already shown his mettle in this Test and kept young rival and squad member Michael Clarke, who is a big "Marto" fan, at bay.

Mike Hussey, who shared a 165-run partnership with Martyn for the third wicket, heaped praise on his fellow West Australian, saying he had been in good form despite some low scores.

"We all know the way the game works. You make one mistake and you are on your way," Hussey said.

"I know in the nets watching him and watching him in the games, I think his footwork is very good.

"His desire is still there and his touch is still there. Sometimes the results don't reflect how you are actually batting.

"I was really pleased for him to get 90-odd today and I really hope he can go on and score a hundred and take us to victory tomorrow."

Johannesburg has been a place where Martyn has dominated in the past, scoring 88 not out despite a broken index finger in Australia's 2003 World Cup final victory over India and 133 in his only Test match at the ground four years ago.
