…And Trevor makes three
The Harveys did it for Victoria in 1947-48... and now the Chappells for South Australia.
Three brothers in the same Sheffield Shield team.
SA selectors late yesterday named 20-year-old Trevor Chappell to join his older brothers, Test stars Ian and Greg in the team to play Queensland in Brisbane, starting on Friday.
Trevor, an opening batsman, comes into the side in place of vice-captain Ken Cunningham who has withdrawn for business reasons.
Trevor will be restricted to the match against Queensland, and the one-day game against Illawarra Cricket Council at Wollongong on November 22.
Cunningham will replace him for the matches against NSW (November 24-28) and Victoria in Melbourne a week later.
The Harvey brothers, Merv., Ray and Neil, from Fitzroy, made cricket history when they represented Victoria in 1947-48.
In the match against NSW in Sydney their first innings scores were Merv. 45, Ray 43 and Neil 61.
Neil Harvey, a left-hander, went on to become one of Australia’s greatest batsmen.
Trevor is the only bachelor of the three Chappell brothers — grandsons of the late Victor Richardson, a Test cricketer and top all-round sportsman.
When Jean Chappell was told last night of Trevor’s inclusion, she said: “No, not really! How could he be? The team leaves tomorrow.”
Then, joyfully, she added: “Thank heaven his clothes are ready. I’ve just finished the ironing.”
As a schoolboy at Prince Alfred College, where both Ian and Greg attended, Trevor topped the batting records to become the highest run getter for the school since the late Clem Hill, one of Australia’s greatest left-hand batsmen.
Trevor toured the West Indies with an Australian schoolboy team in 1969-70.
He was in England last winter, and when not watching his brothers play in Test matches, turned out for the Surrey second XI in a number of matches.
He began his A Grade district cricket career with Glenelg in 1971-72, when he batted consistently on a series of indifferent pitches.
In his last two club matches this season he has shown outstanding form.
He batted through an innings to score 72 in a total of 134 and, at Adelaide No. 2 ground last Saturday hit 62 while next door his brother Greg was scoring 129 against New South Wales.
