Here’s how the early match report shapes up ...

By Tom Decent

Jasprit Bumrah’s fitness is under a cloud heading into the final chapter of a brilliant Border-Gavaskar series, but a flamboyant innings from Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant helped revive the tourists on a seesawing day two in Sydney.

India were reeling at 3-59 in their second innings when Virat Kohli (6) perished in what is likely to be his final Test appearance on Australian soil, before a potentially series-defining, counter-attacking cameo from Pant (61 off 33 balls) lifted the visitors to 6-141 at stumps.

Scott Boland’s 4-42 off 13 overs in the second innings was a masterclass in accurate fast bowling as India’s batters struggled to take the game away from Australia.

Leading Australia by 145 runs in a Test that is now likely to finish on day three, India would still be confident they can secure victory and, with it, a 2-2 series draw that would see them keep the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

Australia’s total of 181, four fewer than India’s first-innings score, was their lowest at the SCG since they crumbled to all out 127 against Pakistan in 2010. It was also the team’s lowest score against India in Sydney since the 131 they made in January 1978.

India says Bumrah had a “back spasm”

By Jon Pierik

India have fronted the media post play and explained why Jasprit Bumrah was forced from the field and required medical attention.

“Yes, he had a back spasm. He had gone for scans ... my team is monitoring him,” fellow fast bowler Prasidh Krishna said.

If India are to win this Test, Bumrah, with 32 wickets through the campaign, almost certainly needs to be able to bowl on Sunday. However, it should be noted the tourists did claim the final five wickets of Australia’s first innings with Bumrah off the field.

Who wins this? Good question

Stumps on day two

By Jon Pierik

What a day of drama. It all ends with India on 6-141, a lead of 145. Ravi Jadeja is eight not out, Washington Sundar is six not out. Day three shapes as a beauty, with a result almost certain.

Final over of the day begins

Scott Boland has the ball. India are 6-138, a lead of 142. Jadeja is seven not out, Washington Sundar is four not out.

Late chance goes down

Beau Webster has been denied his second wicket when Steve Smith, at second slip, dives in front of Usman Khawaja at first slip, but grasses the opportunity offered by Ravi Jadeja. That hurts in the shadows of stumps.

“That was just a regulation chance for Khawaja… that’s what happens when you get in each other’s way,” Mark Waugh said on Fox Cricket.

Boland is back with a bang

By Jon Pierik

Reddy is the latest to fall, this time after a mistimed drive off Scott Boland, with his eighth wicket of the match, caught at mid-off by Pat Cummins. India are 6-129, a lead of 133, with Washington Sundar and Jadeja at the crease. One thing is certain - this Test ends tomorrow.
