Jai Opetaia v David Nyika LIVE updates: IBF World Titles on the line on the Gold Coast

Latest posts

Thank you and goodnight.

Another victory for Jai Opetaia and a comprehensive fourth round knockout victory of David Nyika, who was incredibly brave and is credited by the Australian champion.

“David thank you, he took the fight on three weeks notice, he gave me a dog fight, I thought he was going to box, I take my hat off to you.”

Opetaia has also made it clear that he wants to get into the ring with Mexico’s WBA and WBO chmapion Gilberto Ramirez to unify the division in the next three to four months.

After a long time unnecessarily in the shadows, it is Opetaia’s time to shine in the spotlight as Australia’s boxing king and one of the best pound for pound fighters in the world.

Many thanks for your company tonight and I hope you enjoyed the action.

Round Four: Opetaia wins by knockout.

Opetaia has really found his range as sweat flies off Nyika’s head as shots connect.

Nyika is dropped from a really heavy shot to the body and like a predator he stalks and waits for his opportunity and ends the fight with a short left hook.

Nyika was incredibly brave and worryingly hasn’t got up from the canvas. The medical staff are attending to him now on the ring apron.

Nyika has just sat up to warm applause from the crowd. Thankfully he looks to be ok.

He finally stands up and acknowledges the crowd who cheer for him after his night’s work.

It was a short night of work for Opetaia, but Nyika was a worthy opponent who will have a big future in the sport.

Round Three: Nyika hanging in there as Opetaia moves through gears

The incredible early work rate from Nyika has slowed up somewhat as Opetaia is starting to work through the gears and lands combinations.

This is a far better round from Opetaia with Nyika leaning on the Australian to catch his breath.

Nyika admitted that he had never been in a street fight outside of the ring, and it’s hard to imagine it given his brawling style to end the round.

Thrilling stuff here. Really rough inside fighting. I cannot see this fight going the distance at this rate.

Round Two: Nyika refusing to be intimidated

There is a lot of nervous energy in there, with both men having success fighting inside.

Any idea that Nyika would be intimidated by Opetaia has been completely torn up. Both men in an absolute dog fight.

A massive shot from Opetaia briefly wobbled Nyika and he edges the round. Just.

Round One: Opetaia starts strongly

A tentative start from both boxers and then in the first minute, both men hold the centre of the ring and start releasing powerful shots.

Nyika is able to push Opetaia back in clinches but the Australian is swinging wildly with hooks that are just missing.

This could end early if any of these shots connect.

Nyika switches to southpaw to match Opetaia, but to no avail, the Australian rains punches on him in the corner.

Nervous start but Opetaia’s round.

Anthems over and Opetaia and Nyika finally meet in the ring

We’ve had impressive renditions of the New Zealand, Samoa and Australian anthems and now the fighters make their way to the ring.

David Nyika is first out to a loud chorus of boos as he crouches to kiss his partner to a Lauryn Hill backing track. Nyika is all smiles, knowing that he was originally on this bill far lower down, injury has allowed him to shine in the spotlight, let’s see how long.

Jai Opetaia comes out to a huge response from the crowd in an Elvis inspired robe with the King’s ‘If I Can Dream’, who we are told that is Opetaia’s grandfather’s favourite artist.

Here we go. We are ready to go as the fights meet in the centre of the ring.

A lengthy build up before the fighters start their ring walk

There is still no sign of the fighters for the ring walks and I’m going to have to reach for the coffee machine.

Jai Opetaia is the picture of relaxation as he poses for photos in the changing room before the main event.

I am expecting a clean and clinical performance from Opetaia and an assured victory, but David Nyika cannot be completely written off as a competitor given his stature and amateur pedigree. Still, it is a huge step up from his previous opponents to take on Opetaia.

We have ‘Sweet Caroline’ belting out, it cannot be long now.

Round two: Huni wins by stoppage

It was a matter of time and that was a devastating performance from Justis Huni as the referee has seen enough punishment and ends the fight.

Potgieter was brave, but limited, definitely the right decision by the referee to end that.

Huni is only 25 and is signed up with Matchroom, exciting times ahead for the Australian heavyweight.

We are now almost at the main event. For those who have stayed up with me all evening, it’s been a good night at the fights, but the moment we have all been waiting for has almost arrived.

Round one: Huni in complete control

We’ve got the IBF Pan-Pacific, WBO Global heavyweight title on the line here and Huni looks in complete control over his South African opponent.

Huni shows incredible speed for a man his size with Potgieter using to spoil at any opportunity with clinches.

Jai Opetaia has arrived

It’s been a long old night, but Jai Opetaia has finally arrived and is walking into his dressing room looking the picture of relaxation.

We are almost there and are just awaiting hometown favourite Justis Huni into the ring for what should be an explosive heavyweight fight against South Africa’s Shaun Potgieter.

Huni arrives to the ring with the best reception so far of the night and the fans are expecting an early stoppage from their man.
