Australian surfer Bede Durbridge suffers fractured pelvis following Pipeline Masters wipeout
Australian surfer Bede Durbidge's season had a painful finish but he took to social media to say his horrific injury won't get the best of him.
Durbridge took to Facebook to tell fans he was set to have surgery on his fractured and displaced pelvis to repair the damage after suffering a massive wipeout in the season-ending Pipeline Masters in Hawaii.
"I'm going under the knife in a few hours to get plates put in the front and back."
Durbridge vows to come back stronger next season after what will be a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
"What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger."
The 32-year-old Queenslander and 11th ranked surfer was taken to hospital after the incident on his first wave in his third round heat against Hawaiian Keanu Asing.
"We're competitors temporarily, but friends forever," Asing said in a post-heat interview.
The 22-year-old American said the wave was dangerous.
"This wave is very serious. I don't wish the worst upon anybody. I just hope everybody is OK," he said.
World Surf League Commissioner Kieren Perrow said it was an unfortunate accident.
"He impacted a reef really hard on his side and went over the falls after that wipeout and slammed straight into it," Perrow said. "
Everything will be OK. But it will be a recovery process after that [surgery] and our thoughts are with him and his wife and family."
