Grand $4 million mansion poised to smash Bendigo’s house price record

This handsome manor is two hours from Melbourne, but with its seven-figure price tag, it will bring attention to a country market like never before.
In Bendigo, Victoria’s fourth-largest city, 25 Hopper Street is poised to set a new benchmark.
The goldfields city’s record house price is $3.3 million. The price expectation for the carefully restored, Victorian-era mansion, built in 1872, is $4 million (by private sale).
Buxton Bendigo is looking after the deal, on the books of agent Matt Leonard.
Each owner of the heritage property has lovingly and gently made their mark, the listing says.
“The home has changed styles and owners in roughly 30-year cycles,” it says.
“The original Victorian residence was restyled to a Federation look in 1901. In 1930, new owners added a lounge with all the iconic details of the era, while the 1957 owners built a brick home at the rear and converted the residence into four apartments.
“Fast forward to 1993, when the current owners secured their long-admired property.
“Their labour of love over a 31-year custodianship has taken it to another level by carefully fusing elegance, comfort and contemporary style to create the perfect partnership of period grandeur and private paradise.”
Luxury garaging, a cinema, a sapphire pool, impeccable terraces and lounging spaces and character interiors, highlight a floorplan crafted for a growing brood.
The Bendigo CBD, which is renowned for its heritage streetscapes – built grand on old gold-mining money – is only a four-minute walk from the property.
Greater Bendigo’s median house price is $567,250 as of the September quarter, on Domain data.
A price tag of $4 million is closer to the prices in Melbourne’s sought-after inner east. Toorak’s median house price is $4.5 million, on Domain data, although the top end there is much higher, with a record of $80 million.
