Days after contesting Chisholm, Katie Allen reveals stage 4 cancer diagnosis
Former Liberal MP Katie Allen has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer that she says “has already spread”.
Just days after contesting the seat of Chisholm in Melbourne’s east, Allen took to social media to share that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 cholangiocarcinoma.

“I know there are difficult days ahead, but I’m facing this with clarity and determination,” Allen wrote on Thursday.
“As a doctor, I’ve stood beside many patients and their families during moments like this. I’ve seen incredible courage, dignity and strength in those facing adversity – and I’ll be drawing on those examples now, as I walk this path myself.“
Cholangiocarcinoma is a form of cancer that develops in the bile ducts, and can often be aggressive and difficult to treat.
In the recent election, Allen went up against incumbent Labor MP Carina Garland who retained the seat with a lead of more than 9000 votes. She previously served as the member for Higgins – a now abolished seat – from 2019 to 2022.
Allen formerly worked as a pediatric allergist and gastroenterologist at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

Allen said she feels “immense gratitude” for the life she’s led, citing her time working as both a doctor and politician.
“Now, I face a different challenge. But I will meet it with the same qualities that have always guided me: practical resolve, quiet strength, and above all, hope.”
After sharing the news to social media, Allen’s post attracted well-wishes from hundreds, including from Liberal Party colleagues Michael O’Brien, Georgie Crozier, and Jason Wood.
“I’m shocked to hear this terrible news Katie. Sending masses of love to you and your wonderful family. Stay strong & wishing you all the best,” Crozier wrote.
O’Brien, who is Victoria’s shadow attorney-general, said Allen was an “amazing” candidate for Chisholm.
“Katie, I’m so sorry to hear this. You were such an amazing candidate in Chisholm and showed such energy, grace and determination. Sending you and your family all my love and best wishes for your treatment,” he wrote.
