Mick Hawi's widow allowed to extract his sperm, court rules

By Rachel Clun

The widow of former Comancheros boss Mahmoud "Mick" Hawi was last week granted permission to posthumously extract sperm from her dead husband.

Carolina Gonzales submitted the application to the NSW Supreme Court just 24 hours after Hawi was shot dead outside the Rockdale Fitness First gym on February 15.

Ms Gonzales met Hawi in 1995 and the couple married in 2002. The pair had two children before his death.

An affidavit submitted to the court stated that Ms Gonzales "desired, and still desires" a child with Hawi.

In the submission, the urologist who was willing to perform the extraction said the sperm retrieval needed to happen as soon as possible, as it could only be successful within 36 hours from time of death.

The State Coroner did not object to the procedure, and neither did police investigating Hawi’s death.

The Supreme Court approved the application on February 16, ordering the State Coroner to make the body of Hawi available for sperm retrieval and authorised investigating police to remain present during the procedure.

The court also approved the storage of the sperm sample, pending an application from Ms Gonzales to use the sperm.

Details of the court order have been revealed on Thursday, the day of Hawi's funeral.

The funeral will be held at Arncliffe Mosque, and Hawi will be buried at Rookwood Cemetery. A large police presence is expected.

The state's Criminal Gangs Squad and Homicide Squad with local police are still hunting for Hawi's killers.

He was shot numerous times in the head and body by a balaclava-clad gunman in full view of other gym goers.

The killer fled on foot but is believed to have left the area in a grey Mercedes-Benz station wagon, which was seen turning onto West Botany Street from Lindsay Street shortly after the shooting.

The car was later found set alight in nearby Chandler Street.

CCTV was released on Friday showing two men wearing black clothing running away from the car.

Hawi had been keeping a low profile after his release from jail in 2015 over the 2009 killing of Hells Angel associate Anthony Zervas at Sydney Airport.

Police believe Hawi did not rejoin the Comancheros after his prison stint because Hawi realised his manslaughter conviction would make him an easy target for police using anti-consorting laws.
