Police shut down out of control party in Freo, DJ charged

By Sarah Brookes

WA Police had to be called out twice to disperse the crowds at two out-of-control gatherings in Fremantle in the early hours of Boxing Day.

A spokeswoman said just after midnight on Wednesday police were called to a large gathering of about 600 people at Booyeembara Park in Fremantle.

Police units from the Fremantle District, Canine Unit, and Regional Operations Group attended.

The gathering was declared out of control however police said the crowd was dispersed without issue.

Then at about 3am, police were called to a group of approximately 200 people gathered on Port Beach in North Fremantle.

It is believed several of the attendees were from the gathering that had been shut down earlier in the morning.

A second out of control gathering was declared and attendees were asked to leave the immediate area and the majority complied.

However, police allege a man who was the DJ at the event, was asked by police numerous times to shut down the event, but instead he turned the music up and failed to comply.

Officers seized the DJ’s equipment and he was again asked to leave the area with the man failing to do as police directed.

The 28-year-old man from Melville will face the Fremantle Magistrates Court on January 24 charged with failing to comply with an order relating to an out of control gathering.
