Part of the Kwinana Freeway northbound reopened on Thursday afternoon following a fatal crash overnight near Baldivis involving two young women.

A WA Police spokesman said the incident occurred at 11.50pm on Wednesday near the intersection of Mundijong Road when a Nissan X-Trail and Nissan Maxima collided.

A 21-year-old female X-Trail driver died at the scene. Another driver, a 28-year-old woman, was taken to hospital for assessment.

Major crash officers attended the scene, with the freeway northbound between Mundijong and Mortimer roads closed for more than 12 hours, causing traffic chaos.

It reopened at 1.30pm.

Main Roads WA advised commuters to consider using Paganoni Road, Safety Bay Road, Karnup Road, Baldivis Road or Mandurah Road to enter the freeway.

9 News Perth reporter Ezra Holt, who was at the scene, said one of the cars involved in the crash ended up on a nearby bike path.

“The car is on the bike path running parallel to the freeway so it’s somehow gone over the barrier and through trees,” he said.

“The whole left side of it is crumpled and there’s debris on the bike path.

“The other car involved is in the emergency lane.”
