Nine News reported the man was the woman’s partner, and he was allegedly stabbed in the chest while sitting on a couch inside the home.

Emergency services later found the 47-year-old man with critical injuries outside the house.

They performed CPR but he died at the property. A young child was inside the home at the time of the incident, Nine News reported.

Police interviewed the woman, and announced about 4pm on Saturday that they had charged her with one count of murder.

“Officers arrested the woman at the property, who was known to the deceased,” a police spokeswoman said.

Forensic officers spent most of Saturday examining the home and bagging evidence there. The man’s mother was also seen at the home after the death, Nine News reported.

Neighbour Doug Mills said he had previously met the man.

“I’ve certainly met the gentleman, whose name eludes me at the moment. He seemed OK,” Mills told Nine News.

“It’s a quiet neighbourhood.”

Another neighbour, Liz Snibson, said: “It’s terrible. I can’t believe that it’s happened. It’s very, very sad.”

The 38-year-old woman, who is yet to be identified, was remanded in custody and is due to face Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on Monday. Her partner is also yet to be identified.

The Mount Helen death is the second in Victoria allegedly due to domestic homicide since Christmas Day.

John Beres, 63, was charged with murder over the stabbing death of his 59-year-old wife, Yvonne Beres, after police went to their home in Langwarrin in Melbourne’s south-east on Boxing Day.

John and Yvonne Beres spent the previous day celebrating Christmas with their family.
