Delays on the West Gate Freeway are finally starting to ease after a multi-vehicle collision wreaked havoc on Melbourne’s evening commute.
Three of the five westbound lanes on the West Gate Bridge were closed for six hours, leading to a traffic jam all the way back to Burnley.
The lanes reopened just after 6pm.
A motorcyclist was injured just after midday when he was forced to take action to avoid a gold Toyota that had swerved into his lane on the bridge, causing him to hit another motorcycle, police said at the time.
The man, in his 60s, is now stable with lower body injuries after being taken to Royal Melbourne Hospital.
The other rider, a man in his 40s, is in the same hospital with minor injuries. Police are searching for the Toyota.

Meanwhile, delays will continue on the V/Line network throughout the evening following a communications outage about 3.15pm.
Chris Miller, of the Department of Transport, said the outage meant train drivers couldn’t communicate with each other over their radio system, and so services had been suspended “out of an abundance of caution”.
Services resumed about 4.35pm. Passengers are being urged to visit the V/Line website for updated timetable information.
