Probe into signal fault that triggered Melbourne train chaos

Metro Trains says it is investigating what caused a signal outage that led to delays of up to an hour across the rail network early on Thursday.
Metro reported just before 5am that it had suffered a “loss of signalling control”, leaving trains unable to depart from stations across Melbourne.
The failure was resolved about an hour later, but it caused delays of up to 60 minutes for early morning commuters. Flow-on delays of up to 15 minutes and cancellations continued through the morning peak period.
A Metro spokesperson said it was investigating what caused the signal outage.
“We thank passengers for their patience as crews worked quickly to resolve a signalling control issue this morning,” the spokesperson said.
“A big thank you to our public transport workers for working to return services to the normal timetable and supporting passengers.”
Over the past 12 months, Metro has operated 93 per cent of services on-time – just ahead of its 92 per cent target.
