A 12-year-old boy who died after his e-scooter and a car collided has saved the lives of other children through organ donation, as his friends and family remember his infectious enthusiasm.
Khye Brickell, from Mill Park in Melbourne’s north-east, was riding an e-scooter about 6pm last Wednesday when it and a car collided at the intersection of Betula Avenue and Childs Road.
Khye died in hospital on Saturday, three days after the crash.
The driver of the car, a 34-year-old man from nearby Greensborough, stopped at the scene to help.
Police are investigating the collision.
Khye’s aunt and uncle, Audrey and Troy Kuhl, said it was with heavy hearts they shared the devastating loss of their beloved nephew.
“This is an incredibly difficult and emotional time for our family, and we are taking it one day at a time as we process this tragedy,” they wrote on Facebook.
“Your kindness and love mean the world to us. Thank you for standing with us during this heartbreaking time.”
Northern BMX Club said Khye’s family were foundational members and their dedication and passion were instrumental in re-establishing the sport in the area.
“Even in this tragedy, Khye’s spirit of generosity shines through. At just 12 years old, his selfless decision to be an organ donor has already saved lives of other children, a testament to his incredible character,” Northern BMX Club said.
“Khye, you will forever be remembered in our hearts, your infectious enthusiasm and bright smile will be deeply missed by all who knew you. Ride on, little champion.”
South Morang Football and Netball Club also hailed the boy’s generosity in saving the lives of other children through organ donation.
“With heavy hearts, we share the tragic loss of [under-]12 player Khye Brickell,” the club said.
“We send our love and thoughts to the Brickell family.”
Mill Park Blazers Basketball Club also shared its sympathy for Khye’s family as they navigated “unimaginable grief”. Khye played for the basketball club.
Khye’s father’s employer said the youngster was a beloved son and cherished brother to his siblings, and urged the community to donate to a GoFundMe for the family.
Police urged anyone with information or footage of the collision to come forward.
