Junior doctor accused of toilet spying worked at second major hospital

By Broede Carmody

A junior doctor charged with stalking and other offences after a mobile phone was discovered in a staff toilet at the Austin Hospital also worked at the Royal Melbourne, The Age can reveal.

Management at the Royal Melbourne have written to staff to inform them that trainee Ryan Cho, who was arrested last week, had also been employed at the Parkville site.

Cho was arrested during a Heidelberg West raid on Thursday. He was charged with stalking and use of an optical surveillance device.

The 27-year-old was released on bail and is due to appear at Heidelberg Magistrates’ Court on August 29.

A Royal Melbourne spokeswoman confirmed Cho worked at the Parkville site between February 2024 and February this year.

“The RMH has been in contact with Victoria Police and will support their investigation if required,” the spokeswoman said.

Staff at the Austin uncovered the recording device on July 3, according to police.

The Department of Health has been contacted for comment.

Austin Health last week declined to comment on the matter, citing the police investigation, other than to say the safety and wellbeing of staff is taken extremely seriously.
