A child has been killed in a caravan fire in north-central Victoria.
Victoria Police said emergency services were called to reports a caravan had caught fire in Lake View Street, Boort, about 5.50pm on Thursday.
“Fire crews extinguished the blaze and a deceased child was located inside,” police said in a statement. “The arson and explosives squad has been notified, and an arson chemist will attend the scene to determine the cause of the fire.
“Officers are aware of the impact that such a tragic incident has on family, community members and first responders and will ensure that welfare services are in place.”
Ambulance Victoria confirmed paramedics were called to the incident, but it referred inquiries to police.
Boort has a population of just under 1000 and is about an hour’s drive north-west of Bendigo.
The Loddon Shire town gets busier in summer as locals and nearby farmers enjoy respite from the heat at Little Lake Boort, which is popular for water sports like skiing. The town’s lakes attract caravans and campers too.
