A man has been charged after he allegedly smashed a stolen vehicle in suburban Melbourne – then tried to flee in an Uber.

Police said a witness saw a fast-moving car crash into another at a major intersection in Clayton late on Tuesday before the driver allegedly fled.

It’s alleged a man was then seen running along Blackburn Road moments before a rideshare car left a nearby hotel.

The passenger in the back then got out and tried to flee as police stopped the vehicle.

They chased after him for a short distance and a Ferntree Gully man, 31, was arrested.

He has since been charged with theft of a motor vehicle, committing an indictable offence on bail, unlicensed driving, dangerous driving, possess methylamphetamine and breaching bail conditions.

Police say the dumped car involved in the crash was stolen, while two people inside the other vehicle were taken to hospital.

He was remanded and will face Moorabbin Magistrates’ Court this month.
