‘A couple of streets are under water’: Melbourne’s Bayside hit with flash flooding

By Alexander Darling

Dozens of properties have been flooded and trees brought down by a storm system that lashed Geelong and southern parts of Melbourne on Thursday night.

As of 8.15pm, the SES had responded to 143 calls for assistance, 25 of them in Frankston, and 62 jobs for building damage.

Frankston received 28 millimetres of rain in four hours after 3pm, with the bulk of it falling after 5pm.

Elsewhere, the Knox SES unit in Melbourne’s outer east received 11 requests for help, Sorrento eight, and the Geelong and Bellarine units four each.

Winchelsea, west of Geelong, recorded 29 millimetres of rain in just one hour after 3pm.

Frankston SES deputy controller of operations Brad O’Donoghue urged people not to drive through floodwaters while volunteers responded to the calls.

“We’ve got a couple of streets under water,” he said.

An SES spokesperson added Victorians should keep monitoring the VicEmergency app and have watch zones set up to receive alerts when messages relevant to them are issued.

As of 7pm, there were no warnings current for the metropolitan area of Melbourne, but areas of northern Victoria including Swan Hill, Kerang and Echuca were being warned to expect severe thunderstorms.

Meanwhile, network provider United Energy reported wires down on Valetta Street in Carrum, in Melbourne’s south-east.
