A teenage driver has been arrested after allegedly running a stop sign, smashing into another car, and killing an elderly man on a mobility scooter.

The 76-year-old man was riding his scooter on Anthony Street in the Logan suburb of Kingston about 10.40am on Saturday when a Holden Barina and a Red Ford Focus crashed.

Police said the Ford then hit the elderly man, but he was declared dead at the scene.

An initial investigation indicated the Ford’s 17-year-old male driver and two passengers – a male and female – allegedly tried to flee, but the driver was arrested at the scene, police said.

The driver of the Holden Barina was not physically injured.

“We’re going to allege that a driver has gone through a stop sign and collided with another vehicle,” Chief Inspector Les Bulluss said at the scene.

Police are still investigating the crash.

“A 76-year-old resident from the local area [has] been on his mobility scooter, going about his daily business, crossing the road, and tragically, he’s ended up being killed,” Bulluss said.

Nearby residents told Nine News they saw the man on the ground outside their home and desperately tried to perform CPR.

One resident said she had previously spoken to Logan City Council about the busy road, but claimed she was told there was no move to put speed bumps in because of the heavy traffic.

The Forensic Crash Unit was continuing to investigate, and police urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage or CCTV to come forward.
