Marquee de stage: Powerhouse opens new entertainment, hospitality venue
A new riverside venue at New Farm will host Brisbane Powerhouse functions and stage music, comedy, circus theatre, dance and cabaret shows.
The Pleasuredome, located on the performance lawn, will also be open to the public during the weekly Saturday farmers markets.
The space, that accommodates 450 people and features bars and alfresco lounging zones, is a sailcloth tent concept by Brisbane Powerhouse chief executive Kate Gould and Australian stage and site designer Bruce McKinven.
Brisbane Community, Arts and Nighttime Economy Committee chair and Central Ward councillor Vicki Howard said the space provided “endless opportunities” for Brisbane residents.
“Whether it’s attending an event or simply relaxing in the shade during your weekly visit to the famous Powerhouse Farmers Market, the Pleasuredome should be added to every person’s list of new things to explore in Brisbane,” she said.
“New Farm Park is visited by thousands of people every single day and this new addition is part of Brisbane City Council’s commitment to delivering more to see and do for residents and visitors.”
Gould said the Pleasuredome reflected Brisbane’s natural beauty, vibrant community spirit and outdoor lifestyle.
“Made from handsewn sailcloth from The Netherlands, the organic-shaped, fluted tent-like structure balances an international feel with an authentic local presence, responding beautifully to its relaxed subtropical location under the Moreton Bay Figs beside the Brisbane River.
“Doubling as a community gathering space and a new home for unique events, Bruce McKinven has created a truly breathtaking new venue that is sure to become an iconic Brisbane experience.”
