Logan man dies in hospital after mysterious assault
A 52-year-old man has died overnight at Princess Alexandra Hospital following a weekend assault, as police continue to piece together events leading up to the incident.
The man was fading in and out of consciousness when he was taken by friends to Logan Hospital late on Sunday night with significant brain injuries.
He was later transferred to a specialist care facility at Princess Alexandra Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday night.
Police were initially called to Logan Hospital about 12.30am on Monday, and launched a search for the victim’s car – a dark-grey Toyota RAV4.
However, Inspector Chris Knight told reporters on Tuesday the events leading up to the assault were still shrouded in mystery.
“I’m not going to pretend otherwise, there are many gaps in our knowledge of the incident,” he said.
Investigators believe the man was assaulted on Rudyard Street in Richlands about 6.30pm on Sunday.
Police have now recovered his vehicle, which had been missing since about 6pm on Sunday, when it was seen at a fast-food restaurant.
Multiple crime scenes between Hillcrest and Inala have been established and searched, with police saying he may have attended the addresses before the assault.
His friends have been interviewed by police but are yet to provide a complete account of how he was injured.
“Those people saw … portions of the assault but not all of it,” Knight said.
“It’s not as simple as saying they were standing there and saw it. There are complexities.”
A cherry picker was reportedly used on Rudyard Street as part of the search for evidence on Tuesday.
Anyone with information or relevant footage is urged to contact police.
