‘At long last he can come home’: Sunshine Coast swimmer’s body found
By Toby Crockford
The father of a young man who was swept out to sea off a Sunshine Coast beach on Saturday has confirmed that police have found his son’s body.
Travis Davis, 20, from Capalaba, east of Brisbane, was swimming with another 20-year-old male friend off Shelly Beach in Caloundra about 3.15pm when it is believed they got caught in a rip.
Three bystanders rushed into the water to help, with two of them getting Mr Davis’s friend back to shore.
The remaining passerby and Mr Davis were swept out further, but only the good Samaritan managed to return to shore.
Mr Davis’s father, Shane, confirmed his son’s body had been found about 12.40pm on Sunday.
“They found him, [I’m] going to identify him. At long last he can come home,” he wrote.
Police confirmed officers on jet skis found Mr Davis in waters south of where he disappeared. They will prepare a report for the coroner.
The victim’s father earlier recounted what happened in another Facebook post.
“My young son Travis and his mate were swimming just up from Shelly Beach, Caloundra, when they were hit by a wave,” Mr Davis wrote.
“Three people raced out to rescue them, two people saved Dean, but the third guy couldn’t save Travis. Search crews are still currently searching for him.
“I have no hope in them finding him, it’s now been 8 hours since the search began. I hope like hell they find him. Feeling very blank and lost at the moment.
“I will be heading back up there first light Sunday. Love you Travis, my youngest son.”
The search started immediately on Saturday afternoon, with a Surf Life Saving helicopter and drones, as well as five jet skis and Coast Guard vessels, scouring the water.
Police said the search resumed at first light on Sunday with water police, SLSQ and police divers.
