‘Horrific’: Triple-zero call was made the morning volunteer firefighter died

By Toby Crockford

A man who was killed in his Fraser Coast home a month ago has been identified as a long-time local personal trainer and volunteer firefighter.

Emergency services were called to Pacific Haven Drive in Pacific Haven, about 20 kilometres west of Hervey Bay, just after midday on April 3 and found Mark Carson, 58, with a severe wound.

Police believe a fight had broken out at the home between Mr Carson and a 42-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, both from Maryborough. Mr Carson was declared dead at the scene.

Detective Acting Superintendent Darrin Shadlow said the 42-year-old man called triple-zero and he and the woman had spoken to police several times since, but had not been charged.

Acting Superintendent Shadlow described the incident as a “horrific scene” and a “horrific crime”. The Brisbane homicide squad has travelled to the area for the investigation.

All three people were known to each other, police said.

“Mr Carson was a local resident for a number of years, a local personal trainer and a volunteer with the local Rural Fire Brigade,” Acting Superintendent Shadlow said on Thursday.

“We ask that people look within themselves, develop a little bit of conscience and contact police.”

Detective Inspector Gary Pettiford said the Maryborough man and woman were believed to have gone to Mr Carson’s home about 8am on April 3, and the triple-zero call was four fours later.

“The investigation team is greatly appreciative of all public assistance received to date which has been invaluable to us, but more assistance is needed,” he said.

“We would like to provide closure to Mark’s family by solving this offence, which has sadly taken the life of a well-loved member of the community.

“The Carson family has been robbed of a life with Mark and our main aim is to make sure those responsible for his death are held accountable.”

Police have appealed for anyone who was near 262 Pacific Haven Drive from 6am to midday on April 3, or anyone with relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Detectives also want to speak to anyone who saw a light-blue four-door 2011 Hyundai Accent in the vicinity of the Walls Camp Road Boat Ramp or 262 Pacific Haven Drive on the morning of April 3.
