Teenage boy dead, sister charged over crash
By Jessica McSweeney and Nick Newling
A 19-year-old woman has been charged over the death of her younger brother after a crash on the NSW Central Coast.
Police said the woman was driving unlicensed with her 17-year-old brother in the passenger seat when the car left the road and hit a tree on the Pacific Highway at Charmhaven at 1.30am on Wednesday.
Residents and passing motorists heard the crash and called emergency services, who arrived to find only the boy. Despite the efforts of police officers to revive him, he was declared dead.
Police said the driver left the scene of the crash on foot before emergency services arrived. She was found a short time later and taken to Gosford Hospital, where she remains under police guard with non-life-threatening injuries to her lower body.
Police on Wednesday charged the driver with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, failing to stop and assist after the crash and driving unlicensed.
At a bedside hearing, she was granted bail to face Wyong Local Court on August 26.
“Speed appears to be a factor in the crash,” NSW Police Inspector David Piddington said.
“The road is for driving, you need to drive to the conditions and ultimately if you drive to the conditions and obey the speed limits, we wouldn’t have this crash today.”
Witnesses told Nine News they heard a crashing noise and a woman’s screams for help. One resident said the driver was “hysterical” as they called triple zero.
