A fifth man has been charged over a mysterious bashing that left western Sydney man Vergel Velasquez with fatal injuries in the stairwell of a Girraween unit complex in December last year.
Mr Velasquez died in Westmead Hospital on New Year's Eve.
Lidcombe man Jeremy Owen James Smith, 39, was arrested on Monday and charged with murder to appear in Parramatta Local Court on Tuesday.
Last week, four men from Moree in north-western NSW - Michael Porter, Shane Weatherall, Leslie Fernando and Lionel McGrady - were arrested some 600 kilometres from the Mia Mia Street complex where police allege they attacked Mr Velasquez and left him with critical head injuries.
All four men were charged with murder and remain before the courts.
Police sources say none of the men are co-operating with the investigation and that a motive for the alleged bashing remains unclear.
Homicide squad boss Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said in April that police were mystified by the alleged attack.
"It's clear from what we've found so far that he was a non-violent person, he wouldn't harm anyone," he said.
