Karim Eldehaibi, 20, was killed when his north-bound Mazda 3 collided with a Toyota hatchback heading in the opposite direction on Princes Highway near Hart Street in Tempe, in Sydney’s inner west.
Friends, family and community members shared heartfelt tributes to the young man on social media.
“Our hearts are breaking,” a post from his local soccer team, Dolls Point Football Club, read.
“Our deepest condolences go to his family, friends and teammates from everyone at Dolls Point Football Club.”
One community member said: “My heart is broken. I will never forget Karim and all the fun times we shared. He was the most charismatic, cheekiest, funniest person with the biggest and kindest heart.”
Family members also shared tributes.
“Your sweet smile and beautiful soul will be missed dearly,” said a family member. “You’ll always be in our hearts our beloved champion.”
CCTV vision from the scene of the crash shows the Mazda 3 appearing to spin on the wet road before turning onto the path of an oncoming Toyota, whose driver, a 54-year-old man, was hospitalised. He remained in a serious but stable condition on Saturday.
Police and paramedics attempted to revive Eldehaibi, but he died at the scene.
Police established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
It was a tragic 24 hours on the state’s roads, with an earlier single-vehicle crash on the Central Coast at about 6.30pm on Friday killing a woman.
Police said the Toyota ute she was travelling in crashed into a tree on a median strip in Somersby, leaving her with critical injuries.
Paramedics treated the 48-year-old woman at the scene, but were unable to save her. A man in the ute sustained minor injuries and was hospitalised.
Police are investigating the crash and will prepare a report for the coroner.
