After nearly 30 years on the run, jail escapee turns himself in

By Daniella White

A 64-year-old man who has been on the run for almost 30 years after breaking out of jail has handed himself in to police.

Police say Darko Desic, then 35, escaped from Grafton Correctional Centre between 7pm on July 31 and 7am on August 1, 1992.

He allegedly used a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters to free himself.

At the time, efforts to locate him were unsuccessful, and he reportedly lived undetected in Sydney’s northern beaches

But on Sunday, Desic arrived at Dee Why police station and gave himself up.

Detectives have since charged him with escaping from lawful custody.

He was refused bail and appeared at Central Local Court on Tuesday where he was formally refused bail to reappear at the same court on September 28.

Police say he was originally convicted of two counts of cultivating a prohibited plant.
