The Australian Federal Police have just released vision of a traveller who was arrested after allegedly acting drunk and disorderly in a Perth Airport lounge yesterday.

The 34-year-old, from New South Wales, is accused of using inappropriate language on his phone while in the lounge and in the presence of children and other travellers.

He was refused bar service and left the lounge, but a short time later tried to re-enter and was denied access.

He then allegedly became aggressive towards staff who called the AFP.

The man resisted arrest before being charged with acting in a disorderly manner and obstructing a public official.

He will appear in Perth Magistrates Court on August 11. He’s facing up to a $6000 fine and two years imprisonment.

‘People might wonder why I left my car’: Rescued backpacker releases statement

German backpacker Carolina Wilga has just released a statement from her hospital bed after 12 days missing in WA’s outback:

First and foremost, I want to express a huge thank you from the bottom of my heart – a thank you that truly comes from the depth of my soul! For all the incredible supports during the search for me.

Previously, I didn’t know where my place was in a culture on the other side of the world to my own, but now, I feel a part of it. I am deeply impressed by the courage, helpfulness, and warmth that has been shown to me here. Western Australia has taught me what it really means to be part of a true community. Here, humanity, solidarity, and care for one another are what truly matter – and in the end, that’s what counts most.

I am certain that I survived only thanks to this incredible outpouring of support. The thought of all the people who believed in me, searched for me, and kept hoping for me gave me the strength to carry on during my darkest moments. For this, I want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Especially to the police investigators, searchers, the German Consulate, the medical staff and the wonderful nurses who took care of me with so much compassion. My deepest thanks also go to every single person who simply thought of me – and of course, to my rescuer and angel, Tania!

Some people might wonder why I even left my car, even though I had water, food, and clothing there. The answer is: I lost control of the car and rolled down a slope. In the crash, I hit my head significantly. As a result of the accident, I left my car in a state of confusion and got lost.

I am simply beyond grateful to have survived.

Thank you Australia – you are amazing.

Forrests’ Minderoo tips another $5 million into Ukraine aid

Minderoo, the charitable foundation set up by West Australian billionaires Andrew and Nicola Forrest, has announced another $5 million in aid for Ukraine.

The money, which brings Minderoo’s total support for the war-torn country to more than $30 million, is aimed at revitalising the region’s agricultural sector.

Andrew Forrest announced the aid at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome on Friday.

“Australia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Ukraine because a fair go is in our DNA and Ukraine has been treated with breathtaking injustice,” he said.

“This is not charity, this is a vote of confidence in Ukraine’s future.”

The mining billionaire said Ukraine played a pivotal role in global food security, which has come under threat since Russia’s invasion in early 2022.

“While everyone talks about critical minerals and rare earths and as one of the world’s biggest miners, I assure you there’s nothing rare about rare earths, it’s food we could run out of,” he said.

“Ukraine’s strategic advantage as a food bowl must be protected.”

Minderoo’s aid comes as the United States moves to send more weapons to Ukraine after freezing supplies of air defence missiles earlier this month.

“It is very important that we listen to WA because the prosperity of this nation hinges on the activities in the great state of Western Australia,” she said.

“Approvals in this state are drowning in red tape ... how do we get passed that, you have to have a government that’s determined to bust that congestion and not bog everything down in bureaucracy.”

Ley will also meet with Perth Chinese community leaders, before a one-on-one with WA Liberal leader Basil Zempilas.

“She was raised just around the corner from this church,” he said.

“It is entirely fitting that this is where she starts and finishes.”

John told mourners of Eileen’s life filled with fun, family, friends and faith.

He recounted her personal win at the America’s Cup in 1983, which Alan Bond’s team famously won.

“Our mighty team won the America Cup and mum won the American public,” John told the mass.

Eileen will be laid to rest later today at a private burial.

Proponents chosen for social, affordable housing in Subi and Freo

We take you now to Subiaco, where WA Premier Roger Cook and Housing Minister John Carey have unveiled the preferred proponents for hundreds of new social and affordable homes in the suburb and in Fremantle under a partnership with the federal government.

Under the project, part of the Housing Australia Future Fund, 480 affordable and social homes would be shared across Court Place in Subiaco and East Street in Fremantle.

Cook said WA’s economy was the strongest in the nation, but also had the fastest-growing population in the country.

“We want to make sure that it doesn’t matter where you live in this great state, that you have access to affordable, quality housing, and that’s why we are throwing literally everything at this challenge,” he said.

Carey said the homes would be managed by Community Housing Limited. The 447 in Subiaco would be a “critical boost to rentals and the rental market”, while the 34 social homes in Fremantle would provide “additional and critical supply”.

The projects are funded through a mix of state and federal money, and a final announcement is imminent as negotiations on the final make-up of each party’s contribution continue, Carey said.

“But these projects are significant,” he said.

“All these medium to high-density projects are being managed by community housing providers, and we have full confidence that they will be managed well and delivered for West Australians.”
