Latrell Mitchell ‘doesn’t really know’ what he was doing in white powder photo

South Sydney fullback Latrell Mitchell has apologised to the South Sydney board for the embarrassment he has caused the club, speaking of his passion and love for the Rabbitohs at a meeting in Maroubra on Tuesday.

Mitchell was summoned to front the board after being issued with a breach notice following the emergence of a photograph of him standing over a white substance earlier this month. He will now wait for South Sydney to hand down their sanction.

Mitchell has already accepted a one-game ban and $20,000 fine for bringing the game into disrepute imposed by the NRL, which is now deliberating over when the 27-year-old will serve his suspension.

Mitchell arrived at South Sydney’s Heffron Park headquarters around 7.20am on Tuesday morning in preparation for his meeting with club directors and management, where he explained the circumstances that led to him being photographed in Dubbo.

He was joined by his manager, ‘Wok’ Wright, and advisor Matt Rose to respond to the breach notice issued by the Rabbitohs last week. He told officials he wanted to make amends for his mistake and was committed to the football club.

The meeting lasted about an hour, with Wright and Rose leaving around the same time as the directors who attended the meeting in person. South Sydney chairman Nick Pappas was overseas in Greece.

Mitchell didn’t leave Heffron Park for another couple of hours after undergoing rehabilitation training on the foot injury that ended his season back in July.

He later attended the weigh-in for the Nikita Tszyu-Koen Mazoudier fight, promoted by No Limit Boxing, the promotions company headed by Rose and brothers George and Trent.

On his way out of the facility, Mitchell spoke briefly as he made his way to his vehicle.

“We will leave it with the board and go from there,” Mitchell said. “I just had a good yarn to them. I’ll leave it with them and get home to my family now.”

Pressed on what he was doing in the photo, Mitchell said: “To be honest I don’t really know, we will just leave it there, ay.”

Sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity told the Herald Mitchell showed remorse when he fronted the club’s directors, apologising for his actions and bringing the club into disrepute.

Mitchell later posted a message to his Instagram story stating his intention to “do better”.

“Sometimes in life you make poor decisions and I have accepted that I as a man/family man/club man want to do better.

“ I can take this time now to move forward look ahead and continue on being the best version of myself. Love to all that has supported me through this. Very grateful.”

The board will now take time to deliberate before imposing its own sanctions against Mitchell.

The club isn’t expected to comment until after the matter is concluded and the NRL determine when they will suspend Mitchell. However, Mitchell is expected to receive a hefty fine and be issued a warning over his behaviour.
