Wife of Raiders star banned for 10 years after footy brawl

By Adrian Proszenko

The wife of Canberra star Josh Papalii has been banned from local football for a decade for her involvement in a brawl at a women’s match.

Masepa Papalii has been banned for 10 years after the Canberra Region Rugby League (CRRL) found she entered the field during a fiery clash between West Belconnen Warriors and the Bungendore Kangaroos in the Katrina Fanning Shield on July 14. Her sister-in-law, Crystal Papalii, has been hit with a 20-week suspension for becoming embroiled in the incident.

Crystal Papalii will appeal against the length of the suspension, which was handed down by the CRRL. The hearing is expected in coming days.

The development comes as Josh Papalii prepares to celebrate his 300th NRL game, a milestone he will mark in Sunday’s clash against Canterbury at Belmore Sports Ground. The local football bans will not prevent Masepa or Crystal from attending NRL fixtures.

The CRRL issued Masepa and Crystal with breach notices for their actions, giving the pair the requisite seven days to respond. Only Crystal responded to the charges, meaning the CRRL and NSWRL will enforce the decade-long ban on Masepa.

Footage of the fight, which took place in the second half after the Warriors opened up a 48-0 lead, has been circulated on social media. A spectator can be seen running onto the field and engaging with a player, sparking wild scenes between both teams.

The game was called off after the fight and an official result hasn’t yet been determined.

“The person concerned was given the requisite seven (7) days to respond to the charges, but has not responded, therefore the penalty will be imposed,” said CRRL general manager Mark Vergano.

“ACT Policing is aware of an incident that occurred at a Belconnen sports facility on Sunday, 14 July 2024,” said an ACT Policing spokesperson.

“No arrests have been made or charges laid in relation to this matter.

“As the investigation is ongoing it would not be appropriate to provide further comment.”
